The Color of Spring – California Poppy Reserve

At one time I had a book project entitled “The Color of Spring”. Living not far from the California Poppy Reserve I had ample opportunity to photograph many varieties of wildflower. Spring is perhaps the happiest time of year in the high desert, especially in years where there had been a good freeze and 5 to 7 inches of rain. The freeze causes the wildflower seeds to germinate and in wet years this would lead to some pretty mind-blowing displays of wildflowers. In the next couple weeks this annual show will start to bud and climax sometime in April, so if your planning on visiting the Antelope Valley to see this years crop be sure to drive way to the west. Somewhere between 110th Street West and Avenue K, then jog north to Avenue I and head as far west as I-5 at Gorman. To check the wildflower bloom call (661)724.1180. If you do intend to visit remember to leave only foot prints, take only pictures, waste only time!
